Schilling

The Schilling deal is good for both sides. I think he wanted to finish in Boston and they gave him a good fair offer with loads of incentives. Got it done quick, so you know Schilling wanted to be there.

As for Ellsbury, its his job to lose. You don't start in the WS and then go into Spring Trainng as the backup. Red Sox will either release Crisp or if he's willing to be the 4th OF, he will be there, in that role (plus as an insurance policy). My guess is he gets released. I don't think they will be able to deal him, unless they pay a high % of his contract. They have no leverage to deal him, unless if they are willing to take a non-high prospect minor leaguer or two.

What about Crisp's multi-year contract? Won't the Sox have to pay it all if they release him?

Crisp is a hot item in the offseason talks... he wont be back with the Red Sox next year, and why would they even want him... get Ellsbury in there and get some Relief help for Crisp

As for Crisp's contract - I believe that players who are released, the team that signs him, picks up his contract. Assuming he has a guaranteed deal, the Sox would pay him until he was picked up.

John - is Crisp really a hot item? I can't imagine. The Sox have no leverage to make a deal. It's clear they turned to Ellsbury and don't really need Crisp any longer. Hard to make a deal under those conditions. I would guess there would be interest once he's released or if the Sox would cover a lot of his contract.
