Worcester College hoops

Holy Cross improved to 6-0 with a sound thumping of Yale Wednesday night. Definitely a nice start to the season. I think they have a good well balanced team this year. They don't have that athletic, go-to guy, that can create their own shot, as they have in the past. No Keith Simmons, no Kevin Hamilton. I worry a little about their play at PG. Torrey Thomas is gone. Pat Doherty is a Jr. and has played a lot, but his inability to shoot from the perimeter can be exploited. The team has a lot of experience and has played a lot together. They are 8 deep, too, which is helpful. They can get scoring from Vander Baan, Cunningham, and Clifford, which does give them options, inside and out. But, Doherty has to make a shot now and again.

Also, the ol' Alma Mater, Assumption off to a 5-1 start. Keep up the good work boys. Northeast-10 title?

Holiday Television: The Bad & the Good

So, let's start with the bad. Could someone please explain why NBC would air Miracle on 34th Street on the morning of Thanksgiving? I understand that we all love Christmas and want to get an early start on it, but could you wait until I've watched Home Alone (see below) or at least eaten some turkey? I know that we seem to be starting preparations for holidays earlier and earlier, but is it necessary to move onto Christmas, prior to Thanksgiving even taking place?

Now the good. None of the major networks thought it necessary to air Home Alone yesterday. Fortunately, Fx recognized this and put it on the air last night, thus averting a mistake of apocolyptical proportions. So, we owe much thanks to the fine, intelligent people over at Fx.

Trade Talk

I hear that the Angels are interested in Miguel Tejada and the Dodgers are offering a package that includes OF Matt Kemp in exchange for Erik Bedard.

Coco Crisp, Erik Bedard, Aubrey Huff

Rumor of a deal that would send Crisp to the Texas Rangers for C Gerald Laird.

Also, the Orioles are trying to get Erik Bedard signed to a contract extension.

I guess Aubrey Huff appeared on a radio show and came across as a major d-bag. His excuse was something along the lines of, 'no one has ever accused me of being smart.' Solid excuse.

UMass rolls

Starting off the season with a legit win for the Minutemen... beating Cal Poly... a nice 26-2 run in the second half helped them pull this one out... the boys will be scoring ALOT this year...

Troy Williamson

The Minnesota Vikings fined WR Troy Williamson for missing last Sunday's game. Williamson missed the game to attend his Grandmother's funeral; his Grandmother who helped to raise him. Good job Vikings. Sorry some things are right and some things are wrong, regardless of the legal aspect. It may be legal for the Vikings to do this, but it also makes them look like huge jackasses. Just very bad way to treat your players.

Patriots, Randy Moss, Draft

The 49ers have a VERY good chance of getting one of the top 3 picks in this year's NFL Draft. And as we know, that pick is going to the Patriots.
Do you remember what it cost the Patriots to get that pick?
After you cut through all the trades..... it cost the Patriots GETTING RANDY MOSS to get the 49ers 2008 pick.
The Pats gave the Niners their 2007 1st round pick for their 2008 1st round pick and their 2007 4th round pick. The Pats traded that 4th round pick to Oakland for Randy Moss.
So.... essentially, The Pats got a top 3 first round pick in 2008 AND get Randy Moss for the 25th pick in the first round in 2007.

Birds

What are the Birds up to this offseason. They've released Kris Benson, and RP Kirt Birkins. They signed John "T-bone" Shelby to be the first base coach. Huge offseason so far.

They need to upgrade 3b, 1b, lf, DH. And something has to be done with M.Tejada. He's the one position player (outside of N.Markakis) that might have some trade value. They really need to move him.

Also, Ray is out all next year. So the backend of the bullpen needs a tune-up.

I will go insane if they sign some ~34+ year old on the downswing in their career. (Read: Randy Winn, Kenny Lofton, Luis Gonzalez, etc. Also, if they sign someone like Jose Mesa to compete for the closer role, I will drive to Baltimore and strangle Mike Flannigan and any other Front Office personnel I can get to before security jumps in.) . Also, don't trade E.Bedard unless in helps the team get better, not worse. (Note: Given that they don't seem to know the difference between better and worse, its probably safer to just not trade him.)

Schilling

The Schilling deal is good for both sides. I think he wanted to finish in Boston and they gave him a good fair offer with loads of incentives. Got it done quick, so you know Schilling wanted to be there.

As for Ellsbury, its his job to lose. You don't start in the WS and then go into Spring Trainng as the backup. Red Sox will either release Crisp or if he's willing to be the 4th OF, he will be there, in that role (plus as an insurance policy). My guess is he gets released. I don't think they will be able to deal him, unless they pay a high % of his contract. They have no leverage to deal him, unless if they are willing to take a non-high prospect minor leaguer or two.

Curt Schilling

signed for another year. Since it will probably be his last it's nice to see the Sox signing him. Anyone about possibly trading away the cereal kid and keeping Jacoby for center!!

Randy Cumming

Randy is part of a Sunday morning Breakfast Club, neighbor, good friend, & sports jock. Not necessarily in that order. Hopefully he will get to know who you guys are and that you will welcome him. He may even join the Fantasy Leagues.

Randy,
You know John & Peter already. Uncle Steve is Pat's brother & Jeff Curtis is my nephew living in Boston & son of another of Pat's brothers, Rob or Bob. Brian Curtis, brother of Jeff, may also join & he is presently a graduate student in the meteorology field. (I hope I spelled that right).

Anyway welcome to our Sports Blog

Giddy about the Yankees

Someone back me up here. Is anyone else giddy about the idea that the Yankees are falling apart? Torre gone, brings Bowa and Mattingly. Pettite does not re-up his option for 1 year 16 mill, Arod gone, Posada and Rivera potentially leaving. And the rumors of possible replacement for Arod being Joe Crede.... anyone? anyone? Yankees are taking 3rd or 4th this year

Women

You ever notice that when women stand, they have their feet together. Men stand, feet shoulder width apart. What's that all about?

Lawrence Maroney

Ok Now you guys know that I have him on my Fantasy League & he was my #1 Draft Pick, so I can complain. Have the Pats lost confidence in this guy or what? First, No Touchdowns. Whenever they get close to the goal line is he is not on the field. I'm not sure he's even in the stadium. On pass plays he comes to an open area, no one around because Brady doesn't and won't throw the ball to him - He's the #4 choice, if Brady can count that high. Also whenever you see the Pats celebrating I don't see any #39. The final series where Brady is kneeling down the ball, who's in the backfield - Maroney?? Some feature back! Larry, asked too be traded. You're wasting your career in Foxboro. The Pats don't need a RB.

Randy Moss

Is this guy the grossest WR ever? He has touchdowns in 8 of 9 games. He makes at least 1 big play every game, usually more. He's such a gamebreaker. Yet, he does most of his work across the middle and every catch moves the sticks. Then he hits you with a 55-yard grab. They traded, what, a 5th round pick for him??? Nice job Oaktown, why are you the worst team in football this decade?

Sunday on the Gridiron

Nice to finally see that Gibbs said screw it, we are giving the pill to Portis and we are going to run the ball down our opponents throat. Should have been doing this all season long. Maybe Portis is finally healthy. The passing game is so terrible these days, in large part to a make shift offensive line. Nice win for the Skins. Looking back at the games so far, they easily could be 7-1 (could have W's against NYG, GB), but then again they could be 2-6 or 3-5 just as easily. Good first half of the season in Washington, even if they have the ugliest 5 wins in NFL history.
