The bullpen and offense aren't anything to write home about either. The bullpen is makeshift, but it could be ok (maybe?; fingers crossed). Walker, Bradford, and Sherrill at the back end are decent. Aquino, Albers have some potential to be effective. Bierd pitched well in the spring.

Brian Roberts Orioles Interested: CubsOrioles owner Peter Angelos killed a 7-for-2 trade that would have sent second baseman Brian Roberts and left-handed pitcher Erik Bedard to the Cubs, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
"I don't think we're going to do anything, to be honest with you," Cubs manager Lou Piniella told the newspaper when asked about trading for an infielder. "If we do, it'll be in the outfield. ? It would be a right-handed bat to help out in center field. I would think that's probably a possibility, as opposed to the other things you all have been hearing about."
The Cubs reportedly are interested in Rangers outfielder Marlon Byrd.

George Washington 49, Saint Louis 20

Saint Louis set a modern Division I record for fewest points in a game, falling 49-20 to George Washington in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams.

Talk about a dismal performance. Rick Majerus may be drinking more milk again. (I think he was famous for that while at Utah State.) Unsure though.

How much did that loss suck?

Pretty much was convinced they stunk and there was NO chance they make the playoffs... now to see them have a SHOT, albeit a small one, but a shot nonetheless, makes me CRAZY! You have no choice but to look back and think about the Giants loss and the Arizona loss, just 2 of the losses they REALLY should have had... that would put them at 9-5!!!! And the Giants would be at 8-6... we would be #1 in the Wildcard race and almost DEFINITELY in the playoffs, might actually be locked up... now to have to play perfect and not lose to make the playoffs is nauseating... this is CRAZY.... please, please Redskins... claw, cheat, fight, steal, whatever, BEAT THE VIKINGS

The Mitchell Report, A Day After

A few words, a day after the release of the Mitchell Report.

First, how productive is it to include names of players, when this list is so incomplete? Is it fair to single out a small percentage when there are so many more? What does this accomplish? Also, coming up with a partial list seems like a half-assed job, at best, by Mitchell et al.

How much improvement will come from this multi-million dollar project? Mitchell seemed to name 80 some odd names, most that we already knew about or at least suspected, and the rest are retired and/or no-names. Also, we need to keep in mind that, most of his "credible" sources are guys trying to stay out of the clink. He told us the dangers and risks involved with steroid use (duh). He gives us suggestions that a third party should handle the drug testing and that we need to stay at the cutting edge of testing to keep up with the ever changing performance-enhancing drug landscape. Wow, super insight. Great contribution. This took several million dollars? How is this any different than Kenneth Starr's report several years ago?

In an era of baseball in which so many players appear dirty, we should recognize and congratulate those that have performed at a world class level without the use of performance-enhancing drugs. Manny Ramirez, and Ken Griffey, Jr. are the first to come to mind. You never ever hear their names mentioned in this discussion, when so many have been thrown out there (rumor or otherwise). Maybe we shouldn't congratulate someone just for not cheating, but given the state of things in baseball, we should at least recognize them for what they have done, and for playing the game the right way. At the least, this would be viewing this issue from a different perspective; a positive one. Although, I realize this would break the media's Oath to only report negativity. So, I'm sure nothing like this will be written.

Much respect to Manny Ramirez and Ken Griffey.

What a comeback win agaist LSU last night. Down like 15 with 4 and a half minutes to play. Dominated for the first 35 minutes and they pull off a sick comeback to win by 1.

College Basketball

John - UMASS beats Syracuse then loses to UIPUI. What gives? Loss to Northern Iowa - not pretty either.

HC - tough loss to a quality Dayton team, this weekend.

Worcester College hoops

Holy Cross improved to 6-0 with a sound thumping of Yale Wednesday night. Definitely a nice start to the season. I think they have a good well balanced team this year. They don't have that athletic, go-to guy, that can create their own shot, as they have in the past. No Keith Simmons, no Kevin Hamilton. I worry a little about their play at PG. Torrey Thomas is gone. Pat Doherty is a Jr. and has played a lot, but his inability to shoot from the perimeter can be exploited. The team has a lot of experience and has played a lot together. They are 8 deep, too, which is helpful. They can get scoring from Vander Baan, Cunningham, and Clifford, which does give them options, inside and out. But, Doherty has to make a shot now and again.

Also, the ol' Alma Mater, Assumption off to a 5-1 start. Keep up the good work boys. Northeast-10 title?

AWFUL...Tragic...

This sucks. Sean Taylor, shot, showing signs of responsiveness and ends up dying this morning...I feel so bad for his family, friends, teammates... so awful... 24 year old kid... incredible football player, having his best year yet... just awful

Holiday Television: The Bad & the Good

So, let's start with the bad. Could someone please explain why NBC would air Miracle on 34th Street on the morning of Thanksgiving? I understand that we all love Christmas and want to get an early start on it, but could you wait until I've watched Home Alone (see below) or at least eaten some turkey? I know that we seem to be starting preparations for holidays earlier and earlier, but is it necessary to move onto Christmas, prior to Thanksgiving even taking place?

Now the good. None of the major networks thought it necessary to air Home Alone yesterday. Fortunately, Fx recognized this and put it on the air last night, thus averting a mistake of apocolyptical proportions. So, we owe much thanks to the fine, intelligent people over at Fx.

I hear that the Angels are interested in Miguel Tejada and the Dodgers are offering a package that includes OF Matt Kemp in exchange for Erik Bedard.

I guess Aubrey Huff appeared on a radio show and came across as a major d-bag. His excuse was something along the lines of, 'no one has ever accused me of being smart.' Solid excuse.
